Jayne Castel is known for framing a fictional love story effectually truthful characters and events, commonly set in early Medieval or Nighttime Ages fourth dimension frames. In Claret Feud she delves fifty-fifty deeper into time, landing in the land of Picts (Scotland), effectually the fourth dimension of Rome's refuse in Great U.k.. This as well ways that historical facts are fewer, the civilization more than fictional and the emphasis is even greater on the romantic leads. Still, she does a credible chore of making y'all feel similar y'all are living in fourth century hovels in a common cold Scottish landscape where shaggy ponies are the mode of transportation and piles of furs on clay floors are where yous sleep.

The set-upwards is betwixt warring tribes, where later on ane horrific battle, the heirs apparent decide not to go the way of their fathers and opt for peace. It is a dauntless, unexpected movement. Tea will exist sent to marry Galan to secure the commitment. Bitterly resentful Tea is a stereotypical heroine in the "forced union" trope. Galan, on the other hand, is a surprise. He coaxes her along, winning her over with patience and respect.

"She was about to defy him - but when she met Galan'south storm-grey eyes, her words of contemptuousness caught in her throat. She had expected to see a stern expression upon his face, simply his wait was almost pleading. Did information technology matter so much to him?"

This is an emotional book, with the evolving relationship between Galan and Tea at the middle. However, the siblings of both gene into the story, adding humor and depth. Parts of this novel are incredibly poignant, and the occasions where Tea is called upon to sing a lament at burial cairns of loved ones fabricated my middle hurt. These moments reminded me very much of the gorgeous, touchingly lamentable song, "We Volition Get Home (Vocal of Exile)," sung by the grapheme Vanora in the 2004 film Rex Arthur.

This was a beautiful, somewhat placidity story that told the tale of a swell love congenital on a great respect. I enjoyed information technology.

Loved the story, loved the hero Galen and am fascinated with the menstruation the author picked. Unfortunately Tea took the polish off, I'k not a fan of prickly heroines and Tea was a pro at prickly. I felt for her that she was forced into a wedlock she wanted no office of but I didn't like how long she pushed abroad for and how she hurt Galen.

Tea aside, a thoroughly enjoyable read. On to the next one.

Another neat heroine!! I'm on a roll of amazing stories that have the hero and the heroine in an ballsy battle of wills. In this case, an alpha and his unwilling bride during the dark ages on the Isle of Skye in Scotland!

After years of feuding, the new chiefs of the Hawkeye and Wolf tribes want to make an try at peace. To seal the deal, they agree to a marriage brotherhood, much to the horror of the intended helpmate, Tea.

Galan, as Eagle chief, is willing to take one for the squad, merely never did he imagine himself wedded to such a strong, beautiful adult female; Tea takes him completely by surprise.

Few women railed confronting the world like Tea did - and sometimes her fire threatened to consume her.
But Tea is holding on to her burn down with good reason...(sorry, no spoilers :) and refuses to take the marriage. The results made for a very entertaining story:
"It is a bitter irony that while our tribes are at present at peace you lot and I are at war."
Claret Feud and its setting was like nothing I've ever read earlier. The author did a overnice job of portraying tribal life in fourth century Scotland; the cold, the food, the traditions, the living conditions. I would take liked to read more scenes of Tea settling into her life with the Eagle tribe, but at the same fourth dimension, I appreciated that the sole focus of the book was her relationship with Galan.

Galan made for a great blastoff hero. He was the perfect foil to Tea and her stubborn hot-headedness with his calm, cool, and collected personality. Obviously, he figured out what their spousal relationship could be before she did, and I loved that he fought for her.

"I ever knew it would be similar that for me - that there would only ever exist one woman. That adult female is you, Tea.

I like the "marriage of convenience" trope - it's reasonable to expect it in a medieval romance and, this being fiction and all, it has the added bonus that you know to story volition pb to the couple realizing that they've been magically brought together with their Ane & Only (*phew!*).

I like the "union of convenience" trope - it's reasonable to expect it in a medieval romance and, this being fiction and all, it has the added bonus that you know to story will lead to the couple realizing that they've been magically brought together with their One & But (*phew!*).

What I strongly dislike is that, likewise often for my comfort (I reckon that the acceptable number of times for this to occur would be "never"), this trope is paired with a scene where a rape drug of some kind is fed to the bride during the matrimony banquet, to liven things upward a fleck during the nuptial night and tastefully introducing the idea that the lady might accept been resenting the union at offset, simply the allure for her husband was there all along, the drug merely bypassed her prideful composure and helped her being true to her feelings.

Dandy.

How and why, exactly, date rape drugs (never explicitly referred to as such, of course, considering that would be in poor taste) became a trope in romance, I'm not sure: let'south just say that I was less than thrilled to find a "love potion" (sounds much better this way, right?) twenty% into my beach read and positively aggravated when Castel decided to shift the narrative from the fact that Tea'southward siblings drugged her and then that she'd be "participative" (UGH) during her wedding nighttime to the fact that the morning time later she lied to her husband about how much she actually remembers of their night together. Considering apparently, that'due south the issue at hand here: she'south a prude ashamed of her sexuality and would rather hide behind some alibi - they drugged me! - rather than admit she'due south into her husband. Who are you kidding, girl? We aaaall know yous wanted him anyway!

I'm not going to lie: after such a... hmm... rocky? start, in that location was no saving the book for me - information technology didn't assistance that the residuum of information technology was one manufactured drama later some other, with the usual "strong-willed" female heroine that actually comes across like an unreasonable, hysterical harpy and the cherry on summit of a monologuing, crazy villain.

Jayne Castel writes wonderfully evocative, well-researched, compelling medieval romance: if you want to read i of those, go for The Whispering Wind and skip this cringe-fest.

The author captured scenes then well. I could run into, hear, scent and taste everything without information technology distracting from the plot. The dialogue was very natural and you could hear the characters emotions with only a few words spoken. Very well written.

My only complaint is that I wish it had been longer. Galan and Tea are such bold characters that I would have loved to delve into a large thick volume about them and their journey. I hope the rest of the series makes up for it.

Absolutely recommend and and then happy I institute this new author.

There are a few ups-and-downs along the way, but Tea and Galan are well-matched, and hate turns to love. At that place are some dramatic moments in the volume, and a petty bit (but not also much) violence.

Castel writes a decent plot, and she describes the settings beautifully. Information technology was a 'dark' and tearing fourth dimension in many means, and life was hard. Just at the aforementioned time, the earth was cleaner and more beautiful then, and she conveys that well. Unfortunately IMO her characters aren't quite as well drawn. You tin imagine them physically, and encounter their personalities, simply I didn't really 'feel' them the manner I like to in a book. They were a piddling flat and two-dimensional, perhaps.

Having said that though, I yet enjoyed the read. It'due south not a long book, and the story moved along speedily. I've already read Bk two (which I didn't like quite as much equally this ane), and I may consider reading Bk three at some stage.

Well worth a read for the depiction/ imaginary creation of life in that far time and place.

Prepare in the island of Skye, during the fourth century, Claret Feud tells the tale of two tribes who have been at war for generations.

After a terrible disharmonism, when the leaders of the Wolf and Eagle tribe are killed, their chieftains eldest sons on both sides – both now leaders of their peoples – decided the time has come for the Claret Feud to stop that has cost them both so much. Adamant to reach peace despite the cost, the new ruler of the Wolf Association forces his sister, Tea, a strong and proud Pictish warrior woman, to wed Galan, the new ruler of the Eagles.

Tea despises her new husband, believing his father responsible for her ain mother's rape and murder, and hates her in one case beloved blood brother for sacrificing her in this way for a peace she doesn't believe in. Simply Tea slowly finds at that place is much to admire virtually her new husband, Galan, and much to desire. Just can she give in to her passions without feeling a traitor to her people and all she believes in?

Claret Feud was a wonderful book. The world building and history were masterfully done. I felt immersed in the lives of the ancient Picts – a world that was both fascinating and roughshod – without feeling deluged by historical facts. Tea is a fabulous, circuitous effigy. Her pride and her conviction terminate her seeing her husband for the man he is, but at the same time you can't help simply admire her strength and courage. Galan is a wonderful hero, whose charisma and strength ooze off the folio.

Be prepared for a tale that is in equal parts harrowing and deeply moving.

Great story with lots of emotion, history and feeling. This is the commencement story past Jayne Castel that I have read, and I look forwards to reading more.

We back-trail the lead characters on a journeying of trust and understanding through state of war and peace within their island dwelling house. I feel that Ms Castel has put a lot of time into researching this period in Scottish history and this flows into the storyline.

Romance for the Pict peoples

This is the third Highlander-ish romance I take started recently and the only one I finished. This is a new-to-me writer and I was truly satisfied. Historical setting, descriptive prose, and expert characters fabricated for a good read.

Life must have been brutal and uncertain for 4th Century CE peoples.

From the text:"The bicycle could turn in an instant—ane moment you were riding loftier on the favor of the gods, the next they were making sport of your life."

Feudalism

How would you feel if your family or clan decides to offer you equally the bride to your enemy clan master? This is what happens to Tea. Her heart was crushed by her brother and sister. But her brother wanted peace, you encounter, after so much decease. And then the story begins betwixt Tea, bitter in her trial and Galan, chief, who also wants peace. Oh, there are many trials that happen. Betrayals, heartache and more deaths. I enjoyed the reading of this tale. Enjoy.
